Background

In recent months, many landowners have been contacted by "landmen" looking to lease gas rights.  Only a few months ago, the offers were $150 per acre and 12.5% royalties.  Currently, several gas companies are offering $2500 per acre and 15% royalties in the Town of Binghamton.  The gas companies have considerable interest in the Marcellus Shale formation.  There are many things which must be considered before signing a lease, the bonus is only a small part of the deal.

Some of our neighbors in surrounding counties of New York and Pennsylvania have been contacted by gas companies long before us, so there is a lot to be learned from their experiences.
